Si is the moon deity of the Moche civilization of northern Peru, regarded in Moche religion as the supreme god, controlling the seasons and the storms on which agriculture and daily life depended. Because the moon can be seen by night and by day alike, Si was understood as more powerful than the sun, an inversion of the more common pattern in world mythology in which a moon deity ranks beneath a sun god.
