The Church of Aphrodite was a religious group founded in 1938 by Gleb Botkin, a Russian émigré to the United States. It is considered one of the early precursors to the Goddess movement. Monotheistic in structure, the church believed in a single female goddess, named after the ancient Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. Botkin, who had grown up in the Russian Imperial court and fought on the counter-revolutionary side in the Russian Civil War, came to believe in a female divinity after settling on Long Island, and he won the right to register the church as a religious charter in the New York State Supreme Court.
