Carina is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Carinae, its standard abbreviation is Car, it is traditionally shown as the keel. It belongs to the Heavenly Waters family of constellations. The constellation covers about 494 square degrees of sky, ranking 34th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is Canopus (α Car) at apparent magnitude −0.72. It borders Vela, Puppis, Pictor, Volans, Chamaeleon, Musca and Centaurus.
