Columba is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Columbae, its standard abbreviation is Col, it is traditionally shown as the dove. It belongs to the Heavenly Waters family of constellations. The constellation covers about 270 square degrees of sky, ranking 54th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is α Col (Phact) at apparent magnitude 2.65. It borders Lepus, Caelum, Pictor, Puppis and Canis Major.
