Puppis is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Puppis, its standard abbreviation is Pup, it is traditionally shown as the Poop Deck. It belongs to the Heavenly Waters family of constellations and lies in the second quadrant of the southern hemisphere. The constellation covers about 673 square degrees of sky, ranking 20th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is ΞΆ Pup (Naos) at apparent magnitude 2.25. It borders Monoceros, Pyxis, Vela, Carina, Pictor, Columba, Canis Major and Hydra.
