Scutum is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Scuti, its standard abbreviation is Sct, it is traditionally shown as the Shield of John III Sobieski. It belongs to the Hercules family of constellations and lies in the fourth quadrant of the southern hemisphere. The constellation covers about 109 square degrees of sky, ranking 84th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is α Sct (Tianbian) at apparent magnitude 3.85. It borders Aquila, Sagittarius and Serpens Cauda.
