Tucana is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Tucanae, its standard abbreviation is Tuc, it is traditionally shown as the toucan. It belongs to the Bayer family of constellations and lies in the first quadrant of the southern hemisphere. The constellation covers about 295 square degrees of sky, ranking 48th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is α Tuc (Lang-Exster) at apparent magnitude 2.87. It borders Grus, Indus, Octans, Hydrus, Eridanus and Phoenix. It is one of twelve constellations conceived in the late sixteenth century by Petrus Plancius from the observations of Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman.
