Canes Venatici is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Canum Venaticorum, its standard abbreviation is CVn, it is traditionally shown as the Hunting Dogs. The constellation covers about 465 square degrees of sky, ranking 38th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is Cor Caroli (α CVn) at apparent magnitude 2.90. It borders Ursa Major, Boötes and Coma Berenices. In this atlas the entity is the shared sky reference for astronomical objects catalogued by constellation, so every star, nebula or galaxy located within Canes Venatici resolves to one identity.
