Phoenix is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Phoenicis, its standard abbreviation is Phe, it is traditionally shown as the Phoenix. It belongs to the Bayer family of constellations and lies in the first quadrant of the southern hemisphere. The constellation covers about 469 square degrees of sky, ranking 37th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is α Phe (Ankaa) at apparent magnitude 2.40. It borders Sculptor, Grus, Tucana, Hydrus, Eridanus and Fornax.
