Home›Musical Works›TraditionBrowse ByTraditionThis page groups musical works by the religion that produced them. Wikipedia notes that "religions such as Islam, Judaism, and Sinism demonstrate this, splitting off into different forms and styles of music that depend on varying religious practices." Browsing by tradition lets a visitor read every work from one religious tradition together.Learn MoreTraditionSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)Learn MoreWhat a Musical Work Entry Covers This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.A musical work entry records a piece of music, a chant, a hymn setting, a recorded song or album, composed or performed for a religious purpose or carrying explicitly religious subject matter, distinct from the atlas's separate Hymn entries in covering a wider range of forms, liturgical chant, devotional recordings, contemporary religious music released outside any formal liturgy, that a hymn entry's narrower, congregational sense does not reach. An entry records a work's origin, who created or first performed it and where, and how it functions within its tradition, whether it belongs to formal liturgical use, to private devotional listening, or to a wider popular audience that may or may not share the tradition it draws on. Where a work carries a documented religious subject rather than only a religious origin, an artist working from personal faith but writing for a general audience, the entry records that distinction too. Religious music varies enormously in how it reaches a listener, from chant transmitted almost entirely through direct oral instruction to recordings distributed globally within days of release, and an entry records that context because how a piece of religious music travels, and to whom, is frequently as informative as the music itself about what role it plays in the tradition that produced it.Ethnomusicology and the Study of Devotional Music This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.Studying devotional music seriously means treating it as more than a recorded artifact to be analyzed on the page; the ethnomusicologist Regula Burckhardt Qureshi's study of qawwali, the devotional Sufi music of the Indian subcontinent, works directly from fieldwork, sitting with performers and the audiences gathered around them at actual devotional gatherings, because a great deal of what a piece of devotional music does depends on the setting it is performed in and the relationship between performer and listener that the setting creates. That fieldwork based method matters because a devotional performance is rarely a fixed, repeatable object the way a printed score is. A qawwali performance responds live to its listeners, extending a phrase that visibly moves the audience toward ecstatic devotion and cutting one that does not land, so that no single recording fully captures what the tradition understands the music to be doing in the moment. The same lesson generalizes well beyond qawwali. Wherever a musical work entry describes a tradition's devotional music, the entry tries to record not only the piece itself but something of how it is actually used, sung, chanted or played, and by whom, since the fixed recording an entry can point to is frequently only a trace of a much more responsive living practice.TraditionFilter Results55 entriesAdherents Today MaximumAll368,000 (1)887,000 (1)1,000,000 (1)1,500,000 (2)3,500,000 (1)17,887,212 (1)22,785,195 (1)95,000,000 (1)100,000,000 (1)110,000,000 (1)260,000,000 (1)1,406,000,000 (1)Adherents Today MinimumAll368,000 (1)887,000 (1)1,000,000 (1)1,500,000 (2)2,500,000 (1)17,887,212 (1)22,785,195 (1)53,871,526 (1)78,000,000 (1)80,000,000 (1)220,000,000 (1)1,406,000,000 (1)Bankruptcy FilingsAll1 (1)28 (1)Basis of the Education Facility CountAllThe Body's Own Published Statistics (2)Basis of the Health Facility CountAllThe Body's Own Published Statistics (1)Basis of the Humanitarian Aid FigureAllGovernment Registry (1)The Body's Own Published Statistics (2)Basis of the Membership FigureAllChurch-Reported Rolls (32)Independent Survey (16)National Census (12)Scholarly or Demographic Estimate (13)Basis of the Wealth FigureAllAudited Annual Report (9)Court-Documented Inventory (1)Journalistic or Scholarly Estimate (7)Regulator Filing (3)The Body's Own Published Statistics (4)Calendar SystemAllJulian (Old Calendar) (2)Church FamilyAllAdventist (1)African Initiated Church (2)Anglican (5)Baptist (3)Eastern Catholic (1)Eastern Orthodox (8)Evangelical (2)Latter Day Saint (1)Lutheran (5)Methodist (6)Moravian (1)Oriental Orthodox (3)Pentecostal (3)Reformed (3)Restorationist (1)Roman Catholic (1)Date of SeparationAll2019-2023 (1)Date of Separation End YearAll1204 (2)1555 (1)1560 (1)1566 (1)1571 (1)1612 (1)1795 (1)1830 (1)1846 (1)1850 (1)1863 (1)1865 (1)1908 (1)1913 (1)1925 (1)1966 (1)2019 (1)Date of Separation Start YearAll451 (2)1054 (3)1346 (1)1457 (1)1521 (1)1534 (2)1536 (1)1560 (1)1609 (1)1784 (1)1787 (1)1810 (1)1811 (1)1830 (1)1833 (1)1843 (1)1844 (1)1858 (1)1861 (1)1881 (1)1883 (1)1885 (1)1895 (1)1961 (1)1966 (1)1993 (1)2018 (1)Defining Doctrinal PositionAllA founding prophet's teaching and healing ministry held central to the church's identity (1)Achintya bhedabheda: inconceivable oneness and difference (1)Achintya bhedabheda: inconceivable oneness and difference (1)Affirms the Filioque: the Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son (1)An interior path (tasawwuf) pursued within the schools of law (1)Chalcedonian: two natures in the one person of Christ (Chalcedon, 451) (5)Chalcedonian: two natures in the one person of Christ (Chalcedon, 451) (15)Christ's Second Appearing already fulfilled in the movement's own founding (1)Halakha binding, but developing through scholarship (1)Halakha informative rather than binding on the individual (1)Miaphysite: one incarnate nature of the Word, divine and human united (3)No fixed pantheon or liturgy;
