Yongdam Yusa

New Religious Movement Scriptures

The Yongdam Yusa, Songs of Yongdam, is the second of Donghak and Cheondoism's two founding scriptures, a collection of Choe Je-u's teaching composed in vernacular Korean Hangeul verse rather than the classical Chinese of the companion Donggyeong Daejeon, so that it could be read and sung by ordinary people who had no classical education. Named for Yongdam, near Gyeongju, where Choe Je-u experienced the 1860 revelation that founded the movement, it carries the same core teaching in accessible form, compiled and published alongside the Donggyeong Daejeon by his successor, Choe Si-hyeong, in the 1880s.
