All Ordinary Months

The eight months of the Islamic year that carry no religious prohibition on warfare: Safar, the two Rabis, the two Jumadas, Shaban, Ramadan and Shawwal. Ramadan among them is set apart by fasting rather than by this grouping. Excludes the four sacred months, in which the Quran prohibits fighting.

Eight Hijri Months Outside the Four Sacred Months, and What Lunar Drift Does to Their Names

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Ordinary Months gathers the eight months of the Hijri year that fall outside the four sacred months, the run from Safar through Shawwal, and shows what the Islamic calendar's lunar drift does to a naming system built for a season it no longer tracks.

Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani and the two Jumada months carry names describing emptiness, spring and dryness from the pre-Islamic Arabian calendar on which the naming was fixed; because the Hijri calendar is strictly lunar with no leap month, every month drifts roughly eleven days earlier against the Gregorian year, so none of these months still falls in the season its name recalls. Most carry no major fixed observance of their own. Rabi al-Awwal is the exception, associated by many Muslims with the birth of the Prophet Muhammad and marked as Mawlid on its twelfth day, though the observance is not universally practised.

Shaban functions as a preparatory month before Ramadan, its fifteenth night observed by some as Laylat al-Baraat, the night of forgiveness. Ramadan itself, the ninth month, is the calendar's holiest despite standing outside the four sacred months, the month in which the Quran was first revealed and Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Shawwal follows directly, opening with Eid al-Fitr and carrying six recommended voluntary fasting days, ordinary in name only, sitting beside the year's most significant month rather than among its sacred ones.
