All Painting

Groups the artwork entries that are paintings on canvas: portraits and history paintings of the religious, political and scientific figures this atlas otherwise documents, from state portraits of monarchs to studio and posthumous portraits of natural philosophers whose own work engaged theology. Belongs here: any painted portrait or history painting, on canvas, of a figure or event the atlas documents. Does not belong here: paintings on a wood panel, grouped under Panel Painting, and works painted directly on wall or ceiling, grouped under Murals & Frescoes.
