Portrait of Johannes Kepler (1620, Thomasstift Strasbourg)

Painting

An anonymous 1620 portrait of the astronomer Johannes Kepler, its painter unrecorded in either source consulted, held in the Thomasstift, the collegiate foundation of the Thomaskirche in Strasbourg. The portrait is the original from which the reproduction used as the lead infobox image of Kepler's English Wikipedia article descends, itself dated only as "after 1620 original" without naming the Strasbourg holding directly; the German-language Kepler article supplies that detail. Painted during the years Kepler spent in Linz as imperial mathematician, following the 1611-1612 upheavals that had driven him from Prague, it is among the earliest securely dated likenesses of him.
