Peoples whose traditional religion's deeper knowledge and ritual authority are entered only through initiation into a priesthood: a formally recognized priestly office or order, rather than a lay society or an informal teacher-student line. This differs from initiatory society, where the initiatory body is not specifically a priesthood, and from initiatory transmission, where knowledge passes person to person without necessarily conferring a priestly office.
