Persecution

Coordinated attacks on 28 May 2010 against two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore, Pakistan, Bait-ul-Noor in Model Town and Darul Zikr in Garhi Shahu, using guns, grenades and suicide bombers during Friday prayers. Ninety-four worshippers were killed and more than one hundred injured. The Punjabi Taliban, a Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan affiliated network, claimed responsibility.

Facts
Status
Official Recognition
Not formally recognized by any body 1
A single documented terrorist attack rather than a state campaign; not classified by any international body under the genocide or crimes-against-humanity vocabulary, which is reserved for sustained persecution.
Recognition Basis
No international body has classified the attack as genocide or crimes against humanity. Domestically, Human Rights Watch documented in 2012, two years after the attack, that the two attackers captured at the scene had still not been brought to trial, stating plainly that the government "seldom brings charges against perpetrators of anti-Ahmadi violence and discrimination." On 17 January 2015 an Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore convicted two Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan members, Abdullah and Moavia, sentencing both to death on multiple counts for the attack, the first judicial accounting reached in the case. 2
Consequences
Death Toll
from 94 1
Human Rights Watch's own contemporary reporting; other outlets reported figures from 93 to 98 in the days immediately following as the toll from the wounded rose, which is the ordinary pattern for a developing mass-casualty count rather than a genuine scholarly disagreement.
Death Toll
to 98 1
Completes the range already named for this attack's death toll: contemporary reporting in the days after the 28 May 2010 attack gave figures from 93 to 98 as the toll from the wounded rose, the ordinary pattern for a developing mass-casualty count rather than a genuine scholarly disagreement.
