Brigham Young (Charles William Carter, c. 1865)

Photograph

An albumen print photograph of Brigham Young, second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taken circa 1865 by the Utah photographer Charles William Carter, showing Young's head and shoulders facing left. The print, measuring 156mm by 103mm, is held by the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., under accession number NPG.80.284, and is the portrait Wikipedia itself uses as the lead image of its Brigham Young article.

Rights and Reproduction
Reproduction and CopyrightSourced to the subject's own account
Because the photograph dates from 1865, it has long since passed out of copyright under United States law, and that freedom from any rights claim, combined with the Smithsonian's own high resolution digitization of the print, made it a natural default choice for reference works needing an unencumbered image of Young, which is presumably why Wikipedia adopted it as the lead portrait of its article rather than a later church-produced photograph still carrying a rights claim. 1
