All Biennial Herbs

Herbs that spend their first year growing leaves and roots and flower, set seed and die in their second, such as parsley, caraway, chervil, mullein and angelica. A plant belongs here when its cited plant database page gives its life cycle as biennial. It excludes annual herbs, which finish in one season, and perennial herbs, which live on for many years. Gatherers of these herbs learned to take the leaves and roots in the first year and the seed in the second, since the plant changes its character between the two seasons, and the group keeps that practical distinction visible for the reader.
