Home›Position 2 in Its Cycle›Belongs To TraditionBrowse ByBelongs To TraditionThis page groups cosmological ages by the tradition whose own cycle of time they belong to. Wikipedia notes that "in the Mahabharata, the words yuga and kalpa (a day of Brahma) are used interchangeably to describe the cycle of creation and destruction," showing how tightly one tradition's vocabulary shapes its ages. Browsing by belongs-to-tradition lets a visitor find every age drawn from the same tradition's reckoning of time.FactsLearn MoreBelongs To TraditionSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsDirectoryCategoryWell-attestedAges 1Learn MoreA Step Down, Except Once This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. In three of the five traditions this stage is already a step down from the one before it. Hesiod's Silver Age is a childish, foolish and violent race that Zeus destroys for refusing the gods due honor. Sushama is a happy age, but Jain cosmology describes it as already lower than Sushama-sushama in stature, lifespan and happiness. Zoho keeps the Buddha's teaching and its outward practice, but the attainment that practice is meant to produce is held to have already failed, so what remains only resembles the true Dharma of the first age. The Second Sun and the Age of the Son break that pattern in opposite directions. The Second Sun is simply the next world in Aztec myth's sequence, ruled by Quetzalcoatl and ended by a hurricane, carrying no claim of decline built into its number. The Age of the Son moves the other way entirely: in Joachim's Trinitarian reading of history, his three ages rise toward greater spiritual freedom, so the second age, corresponding to the New Testament and grace mixed with law, is an advance on the first rather than a falling away from it. Position two, across this group, names where a stage sits in sequence far more reliably than it names whether that stage is worse than the one it follows.Belongs To TraditionFilter Results5 entriesAdherents Today MaximumAll5,000,000 (1)324,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Adherents Today MinimumAll4,000,000 (1)324,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Basis of the Membership FigureAllIndependent Survey (2)National Census (1)Scholarly or Demographic Estimate (3)Era of Decline End YearAll529 (1)1600 (1)Era of Decline Start YearAll380 (1)1521 (1)Establishment StatusAllVaries by Province (2)How the Expectation Is EnforcedAllCustomary Norm (1)Obligation to Support, No Set Rate (1)Membership Figure As OfAll2001-01-01 (1)2010-01-01 (2)2011-01-01 (1)2011-12-19 (1)2012-12-18 (1)2020-01-01 (2)2021-01-01 (1)Origin Period End YearAll700 BCE (1)400 BCE (2)50 (1)1428 (1)Origin Period Start YearAll1400 BCE (1)600 BCE (1)500 BCE (1)30 (1)1325 (1)Position on SexualityAllThe body holds no single settled position; the question is actively and openly contested within it (1)Practice StatusAllDiscontinued as a state religion (2)Living, and practised in varied local forms (3)Status TodayAllHistorical; not practised continuously (2)Living tradition, practised today (3)TheologyAllMonotheistic: one God (1)Non-theistic: no creator god is central (2)Polytheistic: many gods (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareAncient Greek ReligionBelongs To Tradition1 entryAztec ReligionBelongs To Tradition1 entryBuddhismBelongs To Tradition1 entryChristianityBelongs To Tradition1 entryJainismBelongs To Tradition1 entrySources1.
