Wikipedia notes that "some degree of recurrence in place and repetition over time of ritual action is necessary for a cult to be enacted, to be practiced." Browsing by cadence lets a visitor separate a practice performed on a fixed schedule from one performed only rarely or once.FactsLearn MoreDailySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedDisciplines sustained over time rather than performed on a set occasion: prayer, fasting, almsgiving, meditation, study, pilgrimage, asceticism. The division from ritual is this classification's own line and is drawn differently across the literature; many traditions keep the same act as both a prescribed rite and a standing discipline. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedA standard analytic category in the study of religion 2Learn MoreThe Ongoing Disciplines of Religious Life A practice, as distinct from a formal rite, is an ongoing discipline of religious or spiritual life: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, almsgiving, meditation, chant, study, asceticism. This category gathers such practices, recording what each involves, which traditions keep it, and in what form. Where a ritual is performed on an occasion, a practice is sustained over time and often woven into daily or seasonal life. Many practices recur across very different traditions (some form of prayer, fasting, meditation and charity is found almost everywhere), though the form and meaning each gives them differ.Comparable Across Traditions The recurrence of practices across traditions makes them a natural point of comparison: fasting in Ramadan, in Lent, on Yom Kippur and in Hindu vratas can be set alongside one another, as can the meditative disciplines of Buddhism, Hinduism and Christian contemplation. The atlas describes each in its own tradition's terms while making such comparison possible. The practices group by kind (devotional, ascetic, meditative, ethical, purificatory, ecstatic and the rest), so a browser can move through, say, the meditative practices of many traditions together. Set rites are treated as rituals; sustained practices are treated here.DailyFilter Results65 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll-800 (1)-500 (2)-400 (6)-300 (3)70 (3)100 (1)200 (1)375 (1)530 (1)610 (8)700 (3)850 (1)950 (1)1000 (1)1042 (1)1227 (1)1253 (1)1400 (1)1499 (2)1549 (1)1604 (1)1650 (1)1800 (1)1890 (1)1965 (1)1974 (1)1992 (1)Unesco StatusAllInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (1)Solitary or CommunalAllPerformed alone (10)Performed alone or together (47)Performed by a gathered group (7)Performed by an officiant for a recipient (1)TraditionAllAnglican Communion (5)Anglicanism (5)Armenian Apostolic Church (3)Breslov Hasidism (5)Chabad-Lubavitch (4)Church of Cyprus (8)Church of England (5)Church of Greece (8)Church of Ireland (5)Church of Sweden (4)Conservative Judaism (1)Coptic Orthodoxy (4)Eastern Orthodoxy (8)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (8)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (3)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (3)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (4)Georgian Orthodox Church (8)Greek Orthodox Church (8)Haredi Judaism (4)Hasidic Judaism (4)Lutheranism (4)Modern Orthodox Judaism (4)Nichiren (1)Oriental Orthodoxy (3)Orthodox Judaism (4)Pure Land (1)Reform Judaism (2)Roman Catholicism (12)Romanian Orthodox Church (8)Russian Orthodox Church (8)Serbian Orthodox Church (8)Shaivism (2)Shaktism (1)Shia (Twelver) (2)Smartism (1)Soto (1)Sufism (2)The Episcopal Church (5)Theravada (3)Tibetan Buddhism (1)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (8)Vaishnavism (1)Vajrayana (1)Zen (4)Category of PracticeAllAscetic (1)Devotional (16)Meditative (3)Who Performs ItAllAll adherents of the tradition (43)Clergy or ordained officiants (11)Householders, those living in the world (1)Initiates only (2)Lay people (4)Monastics: monks and nuns (4)Practice StatusAllHistorical; not practised continuously (3)Living tradition, practised today (58)Revived or reconstructed in the modern era (1)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (65)ObligationAllObligatory (24)Obligatory on those who meet its conditions (3)Optional and voluntary (2)Recommended and meritorious, not required (6)In GroupAllAncient and Historical Religious Practices (1)Buddhist Devotional Practices (4)Christian Devotional Practices (12)Hindu Devotional Practices (3)Islamic Devotional Practices (9)Jewish Devotional Practices (4)New Religious Movement Practices (2)Sikh Devotional Practices (2)Zoroastrian Devotional Practices (5)Founded ByAllMata Khivi (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 65AbhyangaDailyAgpeyaDailyAiwisruthrem GahDailyAlms round (pindapata)DailyAsrDailyAutosacrifice (Ritual Bloodletting)DailyCentering prayerDailyChanting HUDailyChanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyoDailyComplineDailyDaily Temple Ritual (Cult Image Service)DailyDhikr (remembrance of God)DailyDhuhrDailyFajrDailyGrand SilenceDailyHavan GahDailyHellenic Household WorshipDailyHitbodedutDailyHukamnamaDailyIshaDailyJapaDailyKayotsargaDailyKinhin (walking meditation)DailyKirtanDailyKoan practiceDailyLangarDailyLaudsDailyLectio divinaDailyLiturgy of the HoursDailyMaarivDailyMaghribDailyMandala offeringDailyMatinsDailyMetta-bhavana (loving-kindness meditation)DailyMinchaDailyMindfulnessDailyMuraqabahDailyNembutsu (reciting Amitabha's name)DailyNone (Ninth Hour)DailyPesukei DezimraDailyPratikramanaDailyPraying the RosaryDailyPrimeDailyProstrationsDailyPuja (daily worship)DailyQiyam al-LaylDailyRapithwin GahDailySamatha (calm abiding)DailySamayikaDailySextDailyShacharitDailyShikantaza (just sitting)DailyTahajjudDailyTai chi (Taijiquan)DailyTerceDailyThe Five Falun Gong ExercisesDailyTonglen (giving and taking)DailyUse of the Book of Common PrayerDailyUshahin GahDailyUzerin GahDailyVespersDailyVipassana (insight meditation)DailyWitrDailyWorship of the lingamDailyZazenDailySources1.
