Wikipedia notes that such practices "would include (but not necessarily be limited to) prayer, sacrifice, votive offerings, competitions, processions and construction of monuments." Browsing by category lets a visitor compare a devotional practice against a communal or a constructive one performed for the same underlying purpose.FactsLearn MoreDevotionalSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedDisciplines sustained over time rather than performed on a set occasion: prayer, fasting, almsgiving, meditation, study, pilgrimage, asceticism. The division from ritual is this classification's own line and is drawn differently across the literature; many traditions keep the same act as both a prescribed rite and a standing discipline. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedA standard analytic category in the study of religion 2Learn MoreThe Ongoing Disciplines of Religious Life A practice, as distinct from a formal rite, is an ongoing discipline of religious or spiritual life: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, almsgiving, meditation, chant, study, asceticism. This category gathers such practices, recording what each involves, which traditions keep it, and in what form. Where a ritual is performed on an occasion, a practice is sustained over time and often woven into daily or seasonal life. Many practices recur across very different traditions (some form of prayer, fasting, meditation and charity is found almost everywhere), though the form and meaning each gives them differ.Comparable Across Traditions The recurrence of practices across traditions makes them a natural point of comparison: fasting in Ramadan, in Lent, on Yom Kippur and in Hindu vratas can be set alongside one another, as can the meditative disciplines of Buddhism, Hinduism and Christian contemplation. The atlas describes each in its own tradition's terms while making such comparison possible. The practices group by kind (devotional, ascetic, meditative, ethical, purificatory, ecstatic and the rest), so a browser can move through, say, the meditative practices of many traditions together. Set rites are treated as rituals; sustained practices are treated here.DevotionalFilter Results37 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll-3000 (1)-1500 (1)-1000 (1)-650 (1)30 (1)100 (1)142 (1)150 (1)375 (1)500 (1)600 (1)610 (1)900 (2)1100 (1)1499 (1)1600 (1)1870 (1)Solitary or CommunalAllPerformed alone (4)Performed alone or together (23)Performed by a gathered group (7)Performed by an officiant for a recipient (3)TraditionAllAfrican Methodist Episcopal Church (1)African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1)Ahmadiyya (1)Aladura (1)Alexandrian Wicca (1)Anglican Communion (4)Anglicanism (4)Armenian Apostolic Church (5)Breslov Hasidism (1)Calvinism (Reformed) (1)Chabad-Lubavitch (1)Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (1)Christian Science (1)Church of Cyprus (10)Church of England (4)Church of Greece (10)Church of Ireland (4)Church of Scotland (1)Church of Sweden (4)Church of the Nazarene (1)Conservative Judaism (1)Coptic Orthodoxy (5)Dianic Wicca (1)Dutch Reformed Church (1)Eastern Orthodoxy (12)Eclectic Solitary Wicca (1)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (10)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (6)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (6)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (4)Feri Tradition (1)Free Methodist Church (1)Gardnerian Wicca (1)Georgian Orthodox Church (10)Global Methodist Church (1)Greek Orthodox Church (10)Haredi Judaism (1)Hasidic Judaism (1)Ibadism (1)Lutheranism (4)Methodism (1)Modern Orthodox Judaism (1)Old Believers (1)Oriental Orthodoxy (6)Orthodox Judaism (1)Pentecostalism (1)Presbyterianism (1)Reclaiming (1)Reconstructionist Judaism (1)Reform Judaism (1)Roman Catholicism (13)Romanian Orthodox Church (10)Russian Orthodox Church (10)Seax-Wica (1)Serbian Orthodox Church (10)Shaivism (1)Shia (Twelver) (1)Sufism (2)Sunni (1)The Episcopal Church (4)The United Methodist Church (1)Tibetan Buddhism (1)Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (2)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (10)Vaishnavism (2)Vajrayana (1)Wesleyan Church (1)Zaidiyyah (1)Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) (1)Zion Christian Church (1)Who Performs ItAllAll adherents of the tradition (18)Clergy or ordained officiants (9)Householders, those living in the world (1)Initiates only (1)Lay people (1)Monastics: monks and nuns (1)Trained or authorised specialists (6)Practice StatusAllHistorical; not practised continuously (1)Living tradition, practised today (33)Revived or reconstructed in the modern era (1)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (37)CadenceAllAnnual (1)As the occasion requires (2)Daily (16)Monthly (1)Once, or at a turning point in a life (1)ObligationAllObligatory (10)Obligatory on those who meet its conditions (4)Optional and voluntary (1)Offered ToAllExu (1)Pomba Gira (1)In GroupAllBuddhist Devotional Practices (1)Christian Devotional Practices (13)East Asian Devotional Practices (1)Hindu Devotional Practices (2)Islamic Devotional Practices (5)Jewish Devotional Practices (1)New Religious Movement Practices (1)Sikh Devotional Practices (1)Traditional African and Diaspora Practices (1)Zoroastrian Devotional Practices (5)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 37Aiwisruthrem GahDevotionalBaptismal lifeDevotionalBhakti (devotion)DevotionalCandle and lamp lightingDevotionalChanting / MantraDevotionalChinkonDevotionalComplineDevotionalDivine healingDevotionalEthiopian Church PaintingDevotionalHavan GahDevotionalHellenic Household WorshipDevotionalIncense offeringDevotionalKirtanDevotionalKufic CalligraphyDevotionalLaudsDevotionalMatinsDevotionalNaskh CalligraphyDevotionalNew Moon observanceDevotionalNone (Ninth Hour)DevotionalPrimeDevotionalQuimbanda Offerings at the CrossroadsDevotionalRapithwin GahDevotionalSand MandalaDevotionalSextDevotionalTalismanic and exorcistic ritualDevotionalTerceDevotionalThanksgiving (gratitude)DevotionalThe Five PillarsDevotionalThuluth CalligraphyDevotionalUshahin GahDevotionalUzerin GahDevotionalVeneration of iconsDevotionalVeneration of saints and MaryDevotionalVeneration of saints and their shrinesDevotionalVespersDevotionalWorship of the lingamDevotionalYahrzeitDevotionalSources1.
