Wikipedia notes that cultus "implies the necessity of active maintenance beyond passive adoration," a distinction between merely believing and actually being obliged to act. Browsing this way lets a visitor separate a commanded practice from one an adherent may take up or leave off freely.FactsLearn MoreObligatorySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedDisciplines sustained over time rather than performed on a set occasion: prayer, fasting, almsgiving, meditation, study, pilgrimage, asceticism. The division from ritual is this classification's own line and is drawn differently across the literature; many traditions keep the same act as both a prescribed rite and a standing discipline. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedA standard analytic category in the study of religion 2Learn MoreThe Ongoing Disciplines of Religious Life A practice, as distinct from a formal rite, is an ongoing discipline of religious or spiritual life: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, almsgiving, meditation, chant, study, asceticism. This category gathers such practices, recording what each involves, which traditions keep it, and in what form. Where a ritual is performed on an occasion, a practice is sustained over time and often woven into daily or seasonal life. Many practices recur across very different traditions (some form of prayer, fasting, meditation and charity is found almost everywhere), though the form and meaning each gives them differ.Comparable Across Traditions The recurrence of practices across traditions makes them a natural point of comparison: fasting in Ramadan, in Lent, on Yom Kippur and in Hindu vratas can be set alongside one another, as can the meditative disciplines of Buddhism, Hinduism and Christian contemplation. The atlas describes each in its own tradition's terms while making such comparison possible. The practices group by kind (devotional, ascetic, meditative, ethical, purificatory, ecstatic and the rest), so a browser can move through, say, the meditative practices of many traditions together. Set rites are treated as rituals; sustained practices are treated here.ObligatoryFilter Results57 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll-2000 (1)-1000 (3)-600 (1)-500 (4)-400 (1)-300 (3)-50 (1)70 (3)325 (1)511 (1)530 (1)610 (7)622 (1)1150 (1)1500 (1)1699 (2)1833 (1)1945 (1)Unesco StatusAllInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (1)Solitary or CommunalAllPerformed alone (7)Performed alone or together (38)Performed by a gathered group (7)Performed by an officiant for a recipient (1)TraditionAllAfrican Methodist Episcopal Church (2)African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (2)Ahmadiyya (1)Aladura (1)Anabaptism (1)Anglican Communion (6)Anglicanism (6)Armenian Apostolic Church (7)Assyrian Church of the East (1)Baptist (2)Beta Israel (4)Breslov Hasidism (10)Calvinism (Reformed) (2)Chabad-Lubavitch (10)Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (2)Church of Cyprus (8)Church of England (6)Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) (1)Church of Greece (8)Church of Ireland (6)Church of Scotland (2)Church of Sweden (6)Church of the Nazarene (2)Conservative Judaism (5)Coptic Orthodoxy (7)Digambara (1)Dutch Reformed Church (2)Eastern Orthodoxy (8)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (8)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (7)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (7)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (6)Free Methodist Church (2)Georgian Orthodox Church (8)Global Methodist Church (2)Greek Orthodox Church (8)Haredi Judaism (10)Hasidic Judaism (10)Humanistic Judaism (1)Ibadism (1)Jehovah's Witnesses (1)Karaite Judaism (4)Khalsa (1)Kimbanguist Church (1)Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) (1)Lutheranism (6)Maronite Church (2)Methodism (2)Modern Orthodox Judaism (10)National Baptist Convention of America (2)Old Believers (1)Oriental Orthodoxy (7)Orthodox Judaism (10)Presbyterianism (2)Progressive National Baptist Convention (2)Reconstructionist Judaism (1)Reform Judaism (4)Roman Catholicism (9)Romanian Orthodox Church (8)Russian Orthodox Church (8)Saint Thomas Christians (1)Serbian Orthodox Church (8)Seventh-day Adventism (1)Shaivism (1)Shaktism (1)Shia (Twelver) (3)Smartism (1)Sufism (1)Sunni (1)Svetambara (1)The Episcopal Church (6)The United Methodist Church (2)Theravada (1)Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (2)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (8)Vaishnavism (1)Wesleyan Church (2)Zaidiyyah (1)Category of PracticeAllAscetic (1)Devotional (10)Dietary (5)Ethical (1)Purificatory (3)Who Performs ItAllAll adherents of the tradition (41)Clergy or ordained officiants (7)Initiates only (2)Monastics: monks and nuns (3)Trained or authorised specialists (1)Practice StatusAllHistorical; not practised continuously (3)Living tradition, practised today (45)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (57)CadenceAllAnnual (3)As the occasion requires (4)Continuous: a standing discipline, not an event (8)Daily (24)Once, or at a turning point in a life (1)Seasonal, at set points in the year (1)Several times a day (3)Weekly (2)In GroupAllAncient and Historical Religious Practices (2)Christian Devotional Practices (6)Hindu Devotional Practices (2)Islamic Devotional Practices (11)Jewish Devotional Practices (5)Sikh Devotional Practices (2)Zoroastrian Devotional Practices (5)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 57Ahimsa (nonviolence)ObligatoryAiwisruthrem GahObligatoryAlms round (pindapata)ObligatoryAparche (First Fruits Offering)ObligatoryAsrObligatoryBedikat ChametzObligatoryBuddhist Temple VegetarianismObligatoryCircumcisionObligatoryComplineObligatoryConfessional subscriptionObligatoryDhuhrObligatoryFajrObligatoryFastingObligatoryFasting during RamadanObligatoryFriday prayerObligatoryGada SystemObligatoryGrand SilenceObligatoryHalalObligatoryHavan GahObligatoryIshaObligatoryJain Dietary CodeObligatoryKayotsargaObligatoryKeeping KosherObligatoryLaudsObligatoryLiturgy of the HoursObligatoryMaarivObligatoryMaghribObligatoryMatinsObligatoryMinchaObligatoryNetilat YadayimObligatoryNextlahualli (Debt Payment Offering)ObligatoryNitnemObligatoryNiyyahObligatoryObserving the SabbathObligatoryOrthodox Christian FastingObligatoryPratikramanaObligatoryPrayer compensationObligatoryPuja (daily worship)ObligatoryRapithwin GahObligatoryRefusal of blood transfusionsObligatorySai between Safa and MarwaObligatorySaikaiObligatorySamayikaObligatorySandhyavandanamObligatorySefirat HaOmerObligatorySeven SacramentsObligatoryShacharitObligatorySikh Dietary CodeObligatoryTawafObligatoryThe Five PillarsObligatoryThe Word of WisdomObligatoryUshahin GahObligatoryUzerin GahObligatoryVespersObligatoryWearing the Five KsObligatoryXenia (Guest Friendship as Religious Obligation)ObligatoryZakat al-FitrObligatorySources1.
