Wikipedia notes that cultus "implies the necessity of active maintenance beyond passive adoration," a distinction between merely believing and actually being obliged to act. Browsing this way lets a visitor separate a commanded practice from one an adherent may take up or leave off freely.FactsLearn MoreRecommended and meritorious, not requiredSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedDisciplines sustained over time rather than performed on a set occasion: prayer, fasting, almsgiving, meditation, study, pilgrimage, asceticism. The division from ritual is this classification's own line and is drawn differently across the literature; many traditions keep the same act as both a prescribed rite and a standing discipline. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedA standard analytic category in the study of religion 2Learn MoreThe Ongoing Disciplines of Religious Life A practice, as distinct from a formal rite, is an ongoing discipline of religious or spiritual life: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, almsgiving, meditation, chant, study, asceticism. This category gathers such practices, recording what each involves, which traditions keep it, and in what form. Where a ritual is performed on an occasion, a practice is sustained over time and often woven into daily or seasonal life. Many practices recur across very different traditions (some form of prayer, fasting, meditation and charity is found almost everywhere), though the form and meaning each gives them differ.Comparable Across Traditions The recurrence of practices across traditions makes them a natural point of comparison: fasting in Ramadan, in Lent, on Yom Kippur and in Hindu vratas can be set alongside one another, as can the meditative disciplines of Buddhism, Hinduism and Christian contemplation. The atlas describes each in its own tradition's terms while making such comparison possible. The practices group by kind (devotional, ascetic, meditative, ethical, purificatory, ecstatic and the rest), so a browser can move through, say, the meditative practices of many traditions together. Set rites are treated as rituals; sustained practices are treated here.Recommended and meritorious, not requiredFilter Results28 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll-1000 (1)-500 (2)-400 (1)-300 (2)610 (5)622 (1)634 (1)680 (1)700 (2)874 (1)1773 (1)1800 (1)1835 (1)1842 (1)1930 (1)1965 (1)1992 (1)Solitary or CommunalAllPerformed alone (7)Performed alone or together (13)Performed by a gathered group (5)Performed by an officiant for a recipient (2)TraditionAllAfrican Methodist Episcopal Church (1)African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1)Aladura (1)Alevism (1)Anabaptism (1)Anglican Communion (1)Anglicanism (1)Armenian Apostolic Church (1)Assyrian Church of the East (1)Baptist (2)Beta Israel (1)Breslov Hasidism (5)Calvinism (Reformed) (1)Chabad-Lubavitch (5)Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (1)Church of Cyprus (1)Church of England (1)Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) (1)Church of Greece (1)Church of Ireland (1)Church of Scotland (1)Church of Sweden (1)Church of the Nazarene (1)Coptic Orthodoxy (1)Dutch Reformed Church (1)Eastern Orthodoxy (1)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (1)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (1)Free Methodist Church (1)Georgian Orthodox Church (1)Global Methodist Church (1)Greek Orthodox Church (1)Haredi Judaism (4)Hasidic Judaism (4)Karaite Judaism (1)Kimbanguist Church (1)Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) (1)Lutheranism (1)Maronite Church (1)Methodism (1)Modern Orthodox Judaism (4)National Baptist Convention of America (2)Oriental Orthodoxy (1)Orthodox Judaism (4)Presbyterianism (1)Progressive National Baptist Convention (2)Roman Catholicism (1)Romanian Orthodox Church (1)Russian Orthodox Church (1)Saint Thomas Christians (1)Serbian Orthodox Church (1)Shia (Twelver) (3)Sufism (1)Sunni (1)The Episcopal Church (1)The United Methodist Church (1)Theravada (2)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (1)Wesleyan Church (1)Category of PracticeAllCharitable (1)Dietary (2)Ethical (1)Meditative (5)Who Performs ItAllAll adherents of the tradition (23)Clergy or ordained officiants (1)Lay people (2)Trained or authorised specialists (1)Practice StatusAllHistorical; not practised continuously (1)Living tradition, practised today (23)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (28)CadenceAllAnnual (4)As the occasion requires (5)Continuous: a standing discipline, not an event (3)Daily (6)Monthly (2)In GroupAllAncient and Historical Religious Practices (1)Buddhist Devotional Practices (1)Islamic Devotional Practices (9)Jewish Devotional Practices (1)New Religious Movement Practices (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 28AnapanasatiRecommended and meritorious, not requiredChanting HURecommended and meritorious, not requiredDhikr (remembrance of God)Recommended and meritorious, not requiredEkadashi observanceRecommended and meritorious, not requiredFast Sunday and the Fast OfferingRecommended and meritorious, not requiredFastingRecommended and meritorious, not requiredHifzRecommended and meritorious, not requiredHitbodedutRecommended and meritorious, not requiredHitbonenutRecommended and meritorious, not requiredIstikharaRecommended and meritorious, not requiredIstisqaRecommended and meritorious, not requiredItalRecommended and meritorious, not requiredItikafRecommended and meritorious, not requiredLandtaking Observances (Landnam)Recommended and meritorious, not requiredMerit-making (punya)Recommended and meritorious, not requiredMourning of AshuraRecommended and meritorious, not requiredMussar PracticeRecommended and meritorious, not requiredNoble SilenceRecommended and meritorious, not requiredPastoral Care of the SickRecommended and meritorious, not requiredQiyam al-LaylRecommended and meritorious, not requiredSalatul TasbihRecommended and meritorious, not requiredSattvic DietRecommended and meritorious, not requiredSelichotRecommended and meritorious, not requiredTahajjudRecommended and meritorious, not requiredTarawihRecommended and meritorious, not requiredThe Five Falun Gong ExercisesRecommended and meritorious, not requiredTithingRecommended and meritorious, not requiredUpvasRecommended and meritorious, not requiredSources1.
