A chalk drawing portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots by the French court painter Francois Clouet, made during her years at the French court between 1548, when she arrived as a child betrothed to the future Francis II, and 1561, when she returned to Scotland as a young widow. Clouet, the leading portraitist of the Valois court, worked repeatedly from Mary as a sitter across this period, and this chalk drawing is named among his most remarkable portraits. It is held today in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, alongside the large body of chalk portrait studies Clouet and his workshop produced of the sixteenth-century French court.
