Portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots (Francois Clouet)

Prints, Drawings and Minor Arts

A chalk drawing portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots by the French court painter Francois Clouet, made during her years at the French court between 1548, when she arrived as a child betrothed to the future Francis II, and 1561, when she returned to Scotland as a young widow. Clouet, the leading portraitist of the Valois court, worked repeatedly from Mary as a sitter across this period, and this chalk drawing is named among his most remarkable portraits. It is held today in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, alongside the large body of chalk portrait studies Clouet and his workshop produced of the sixteenth-century French court. One of his most remarkable portraits is that of Mary, Queen of Scots, a drawing in chalks in the Bibliothèque Nationale, and of similar character are the two portraits of Charles IX and the one at Chantilly of Marguerite of France.
