An early Basran ascetic and theologian better remembered for his role in the formation of Islamic thought than for his reading, which survives only in citation rather than continuous recitation, placing it among the shadhdh readings outside the canonical ten.

Al-Hasan al-Basri's Reading, Outside the Canonical Ten
Al-Hasan al-Basri, the early Basran scholar remembered chiefly as a foundational figure in Islamic asceticism and theology, is also credited in the qira'at literature with a distinct reading of the Quran, recorded here with Basra as its reading centre. Unlike the ten canonical readers, no continuous chain of professional reciters transmitted his reading as a living liturgical practice generation after generation; it survives instead through citations preserved in the grammatical and exegetical literature, which is why its recitation usage is recorded here as scholarly record only rather than as a reading that is still taught and studied as a recitation in its own right.
That absence of a continuous transmission chain, rather than any judgment on al-Hasan al-Basri's own standing as a scholar, is what places his reading among the shadhdh, the readings outside the seven and the completing three that Ibn al-Jazari later recognised as the ten. Ibn al-Jazari's own criteria for a canonical reading required an unbroken chain of named transmitters, agreement with at least one of the Uthmanic codices, and conformity to Arabic grammar; a reading attested only in citation cannot meet the first of those conditions the way a transmission carried continuously by professional reciters can. Al-Hasan al-Basri's reading is accordingly studied today as a data point in the history of Quranic variants rather than recited as one of the living transmissions.
