Valmiki

Sages

Valmiki is the legendary poet and Hindu maharishi, or sage, who is celebrated as the traditional author of the Sanskrit epic Ramayana, on the basis of the attribution in the text itself. He is revered as Adi Kavi, the first poet, and the Ramayana is regarded as the first epic poem. The work consists of about 24,000 shlokas arranged in seven cantos, or kandas, and tells the story of Rama of Ayodhya. Within the atlas he stands as the named author to whom the seven kandas of the Ramayana are credited by tradition, which is a traditional attribution rather than a settled historical fact.
