Kenya is predominantly Christian, split between Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions introduced through nineteenth and twentieth century missionary activity, with a significant Muslim minority concentrated along the coast and in the northeast, a region with older trade links to the Islamic world via the Indian Ocean. Indigenous religious systems among groups including the Kikuyu, Luo and Maasai, centered on a single creator deity and ancestor veneration in most traditions, persist in varying degrees alongside the introduced faiths, and elements of traditional belief remain woven into everyday practice for many Kenyan Christians and Muslims alike. Lamu, on the Swahili coast, preserves a distinctive Swahili Islamic culture shaped by centuries of Indian Ocean trade with Arabia and Persia. The country's small but historic Asian communities include Hindu, Sikh and Ismaili Muslim populations established during the colonial period.
Facts
Law and State
Establishment StatusThe constitution guarantees religious freedom and maintains a secular state without an established religion; Kadhi courts, a colonial-era institution, handle Muslim personal and family law matters. State Funding MechanismKenya funds religion in two concrete ways rather than through any single named instrument. Every public school teaches religious education, in Christian, Muslim or Hindu tracks depending on the class, staffed by teachers on the government payroll, so the state directly funds religious instruction inside the ordinary school system. Separately, registered religious institutions and places of worship are exempt from tax on tithes, offerings and donations, and from duty on goods they import, a standing fiscal subsidy alongside the teaching posts. 4 Apostasy or Blasphemy LawKenya's Penal Code, Chapter 63, criminalizes offenses against religion in two provisions still on the books in the 2023 revised edition: Section 134, which punishes destroying, damaging or defiling a place of worship or a sacred object with intent to insult a religion or knowing it is likely to be considered an insult, and Section 138, which punishes wounding religious feelings. Both are misdemeanors carrying up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both; neither has been repealed, though both are rarely invoked. 5 Registration or Recognition RegimeThe Attorney General barred the Registrar of Societies from registering any new religious organization from November 2014, citing reports of fraud and exploitation by some religious leaders, pending regulations that were never gazetted; the moratorium lasted almost eight years. The government lifted it in June 2022 and the Registrar of Societies issued strict new guidelines in July, requiring an applicant to hold a diploma or degree from a recognized theological institution, show proof of tax compliance, and be recommended by an existing religious society already in good standing. Worship itself was never barred during the moratorium; only new legal registration was. 6 Ban or Official WatchlistKenya's Registrar of Societies deregistered Paul Mackenzie's Good News International Ministries and four related churches in August 2023, following the discovery that year of hundreds of deaths among members who starved themselves in the Shakahola forest at Mackenzie's instruction. In January 2024 the government went further and designated Good News International Ministries an organized criminal group, a fortnight after Mackenzie and others were charged with organized criminal activity, radicalization and murder. 6 Geography

Religion and History in Kenya
Kenya is overwhelmingly Christian, around 80 to 85 percent per most estimates including Pew Research's Religious Composition of the World, 2010-2020, split between Protestant and Catholic communities of roughly comparable size, with a Muslim minority of around 10 to 11 percent concentrated along the coast and in the northeast, and small indigenous traditional religion adherents among various ethnic groups.
Coastal Kenya's Islam arrived via Indian Ocean trade with Arabia and Persia from as early as the eighth century, producing the Swahili civilization, a Bantu-Arab-Persian trading culture centered on city-states including Mombasa, Lamu and Malindi that fused African, Islamic and Indian Ocean influences into a distinct coastal identity and the Swahili language itself, which carries substantial Arabic vocabulary. Christianity arrived substantially through nineteenth-century missionary activity under British colonial rule, and independent Kenya's founding president Jomo Kenyatta, raised Christian though of Kikuyu ethnic background, navigated a religious landscape that blended mission Christianity with strong indigenous religious currents, including the Mau Mau independence movement's partial use of traditional Kikuyu oathing rituals alongside its anticolonial politics in the 1950s.
Coastal Islam, al-Shabaab and Religious Tension in Kenya
Kenya's Muslim-majority coastal region has periodically expressed grievance over perceived economic and political marginalization relative to the Christian-majority interior and capital Nairobi, tensions that predate and have been sharpened by the rise of militant violence linked to al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based jihadist group that has carried out major attacks on Kenyan soil since Kenya's 2011 military intervention in Somalia, including the 2013 Westgate shopping mall siege in Nairobi and the 2015 Garissa University attack that killed nearly 150 people, most targeted specifically for being Christian. These attacks have strained relations between Kenya's Christian majority and Muslim minority, with reports of heavy-handed security force responses in coastal Muslim communities drawing criticism from human rights organizations even as the government frames its counterterrorism measures as necessary against a genuine cross-border militant threat.
Kenya's constitution guarantees religious freedom and maintains a secular state without an established religion, though Muslim communities have periodically sought greater recognition of Islamic personal law through the country's Kadhi courts, a colonial-era institution handling Muslim family law matters whose scope has been repeatedly contested in Kenyan courts and constitutional negotiations.
