Mahādvāra Nikāya

Buddhist Monastic Orders and Schools

The Mahadvara Nikaya is a monastic order of Buddhist monks in Myanmar (Burma), concentrated in Lower Myanmar, and one of nine monastic orders legally sanctioned under Myanmar's 1990 Law Concerning Sangha Organizations. It grew out of the Dvara order founded in 1852 by Sayadaw Ashin Ukkamsa Vimala of Okpho, in what is now Ingapu township, following a doctrinal dispute with the Thudhamma order over ordination practices and the correct manner of paying homage to the Buddha; the Mahadvara branch itself formed in 1918 to 1919. The order maintains conservative Vinaya practice, and 2016 statistics counted 6,066 monks, 1.13 percent of Myanmar's ordained monks and the third largest monastic order after Thudhamma and Shwegyin Nikaya, concentrated in the Ayeyarwady, Yangon and Bago regions and Mon State.
