Insight Meditation Society

Buddhist Monastic Orders and Schools
Origin from 1975

The Insight Meditation Society (IMS) is a non-profit organization for the study of Buddhism located in Barre, Massachusetts, founded in 1975 by Sharon Salzberg, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein and Jacqueline Schwartz. Drawing on the Theravada Buddhist tradition, the society centers its teaching on vipassana, or insight, meditation, and opened its first retreat center in an old mansion in Barre on February 14, 1976. IMS today operates two facilities in rural central Massachusetts, the Retreat Center and the Forest Refuge, both offering Buddhist meditation retreats built around insight meditation practice. Its founders also helped establish the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies in 1990, founded by Goldstein and Salzberg on adjacent land.
