The runic alphabets used by Germanic-speaking peoples before and alongside the Roman alphabet's spread: Elder Futhark, its Scandinavian successor Younger Futhark, and the expanded Anglo-Saxon Futhorc used in early England and Frisia. Belongs here: a runic row of angular, straight-stroked letters cut for wood and stone rather than written in ink. Does not belong here: the Roman alphabet that eventually displaced runes across the Germanic world, grouped under the Greek Script Family as one of its own descendants, and the separate, non-runic Ogham script of early Ireland.
