A Crowd Held in One Continuous Space

An entire village crowds under a single enormous canopy to watch one performance together, a display of skill or oratory large enough in ambition to hold everyone's attention at once. The tent is doing real work in this picture: it is the physical container that lets a genuinely collective experience happen, gathering people into one shared space rather than leaving them to watch from scattered, separate vantage points.

Still within the same expansive stretch of the sign, this degree states plainly something Pisces returns to often, that a well-staged spectacle can, for the length of a performance, dissolve many separate spectators into a single body of shared wonder. Nothing about the content of the performance is specified; what matters is the structure that makes collective witnessing possible at all.

Its weaker form is a crowd moved by nothing more than spectacle, excitement stirred without any substance behind it strong enough to outlast the show, a unity that evaporates the moment the tent comes down because nothing underneath the display was actually holding the villagers together. Nothing in the picture identifies what is actually being performed, only the scale of the response it produces, and that omission is itself worth noticing: the degree cares about the size of the shared feeling, not the content that provoked it.

Pisces 18: The Officer on the Hilltop

Charubel's image for this degree is martial and watchful: a military officer mounted on a fine-looking charger, sword in hand, on the top of a hill as if on the look-out. John Thomas, the Welsh astrologer who published as Charubel in 1898, gave each degree of the zodiac its own symbol, and this one is command placed at vantage. The officer does not fight; he watches, weapon ready, from the highest ground available, and the fine charger signals that the watching is an office, not an accident.

Read against the eighteenth degree of Pisces the picture is bracing, alertness set into the zodiac's most diffuse sign, responsibility taking the hill so that others need not, discernment armed. The familiar pictures for this degree have a different source, the 1925 sitting in Balboa Park in which Elsie Wheeler saw a scene for every degree and Marc Edmund Jones recorded them; Jones printed the set in 1953. Charubel's older catalogue stands free of that line, and beneath both sit the ancient structures: the second century faces of Vettius Valens hold this degree in Pisces's second decan under Jupiter, with the Egyptian term belonging to Mercury, message and watch kept together. Astrologers consult degree images where natal or progressed points fall, reading them as characterisation, and this degree characterises the sentinel, elevated, mounted and awake.
