A Warrior in Bright Armour with Drawn Sword, Spurning a Savage

In 1925, working with the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler in Balboa Park, San Diego, Marc Edmund Jones drew all 360 of these degree cards blind and recorded her impressions on the spot. His book appeared in 1953. What most readers now quote, however, is Dane Rudhyar's 1973 reinterpretation from An Astrological Mandala, a text still protected by copyright and therefore not reproduced on this page. It falls in the first decan of Aquarius (degrees 1 to 10), and is Aquarius's third degree. Its decan is ruled by Venus rather than Saturn, which colors the degree with something Aquarius does not supply on its own.

The narrower term division belongs to Mercury, a still finer layer of rulership laid across the sign and decan. A picture for this degree also survives from 1898, from Charubel's own independent series, published a generation before Jones's. He recorded a warrior in bright armour with drawn sword, spurning a savage multitude. As the sign that closes the social season, Aquarius fixes its attention on the collective and on what should be true for everyone. Taken together, the position, the decan, and the old image give this degree a specific character within Aquarius rather than a generic one.

Aquarius 3: The Warrior Before the Multitude

Charubel's image for this degree is combat as principle: a warrior in bright armour with drawn sword, spurning a savage multitude. The armour is bright, unmarked by long campaign, and the sword is drawn rather than sheathed, so this is a fresh stand rather than a weary one; what faces him is not a rival champion but a multitude, a crowd rather than an army, and the verb is spurning, contempt and refusal together rather than mere resistance. This is Aquarius's oldest self-image, the individual conviction set against the pressure of the many, and the degree does not flinch from how uncomfortable that posture is to hold, since a multitude is rarely wrong about everything and a single figure in bright armour can mistake isolation for righteousness.

What the picture insists on, though, is the brightness, unscarred metal that has not yet been tested by a real engagement, and the honest question the degree puts to anyone it touches is whether the stand is being taken because the multitude is actually savage, meaning cruel or destructive, or merely because it is a multitude, meaning simply larger than one. The shadow readings split accordingly: the true dissenter who holds a line worth holding, and the poseur who confuses being outnumbered with being correct. On a natal Mars or Uranus this degree tends to mark those built for solitary stands, and its counsel is a soldier's, not a zealot's: draw the sword only once the cause, not merely the crowd, has been examined, and keep the armour bright by choosing engagements worth its shine.
