Gorani, also called Gurani and known by the name of its main dialect, Hawrami, is a Northwestern Iranian language, or a group of similar Northwestern Iranian dialects, spoken in small pockets in northeastern Iraq and northwestern Iran. Its dialects include Bajelani, Hawrami and Sarli, and some sources add Shabaki. Hawrami was the traditional literary language and koine of the Kurds of the historical Ardalan region in the Zagros Mountains, although it has since been supplanted by Central Kurdish and Southern Kurdish, and Gorani remains a literary language for many Kurds. In this atlas the entry names the language in which certain scripture and devotional writing is recorded.
