Wikipedia's list of specific sacred places names sites such as "Yazd Atash Behram" and "the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron," each tied to a specific country. Browsing by country lets a visitor find every sacred site within one nation's borders.FactsLearn MoreIndiaConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedPlaces a tradition itself treats as holy, or as a centre of practice, grouped by the tradition that holds them so. The grounds recorded are the grounds the tradition gives - a theophany held to have happened there, the presence of relics, a landscape feature read as a sign, or long ritual use - and a place sacred to several traditions is recorded under each claim, not assigned to one owner. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedStandard. Sacred space is a standard analytic category in the study of religion. What is disputed is the explanation of it: whether holiness inheres in a place that discloses itself, or is conferred on a place by ritual and by human choice of where to act. The atlas records the grounds each tradition itself gives and does not settle that question. 1Learn MorePlaces Treated as Holy This category gathers the places traditions hold sacred or treat as centres of practice: temples, mountains, rivers, caves, oracles, stone circles and pilgrimage destinations. Each entry gives a location and the tradition or traditions for which the place is holy, and describes what is done there and why it is revered. Sacredness is attached to places for many reasons (a theophany or miracle held to have occurred there, the presence of relics or a shrine, a striking feature of the landscape read as a sign, or long use as a site of ritual), and the entries record the grounds a tradition itself gives.Layered and Contested Holiness Many of the most important sites have been sacred to more than one tradition in succession or at once, and their history is one of reuse, sharing and sometimes conflict. A temple may stand where an older shrine stood; a single city or mountain may be holy to several religions with competing claims. The atlas records this layered history rather than assigning a place to one owner, and notes contested sites soberly. The sites group by tradition (Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Indigenous and many more), so a browser can narrow from all sacred places to those of one culture.IndiaFilter Results58 entriesPilgrimage StatusAllMajor pilgrimage destination today (22)One of a named, enumerated set of pilgrimage places (23)Pilgrimage attested historically; not continuing (1)Pilgrimage gathered on a dated festival (8)UNESCO World Heritage StatusAllInscribed on the World Heritage List (7)Not Inscribed (43)On a National Tentative List (4)Cult Centre OfAllAyyappan (1)Jagannath (1)Kali (1)Krishna (3)Parvati (1)Rama (1)Sati (1)Shakyamuni Buddha (3)Shiva (6)Surya (1)Venkateshwara (1)Vishnu (2)Associated WithAllAyyappan (1)Durga (1)Krishna (1)Parvati (1)Shakti (1)Shakyamuni Buddha (2)Shiva (1)Originated InAllBihar (1)India (57)Indian Subcontinent (42)Maharashtra (1)Punjab (1)Tamil Nadu (2)Uttar Pradesh (2)Uttarakhand (2)Holds ElementAllWater (1)Origin Period Start YearAll-800 (2)-531 (1)-300 (1)200 BCE (1)600 (1)981 (1)1010 (1)1031 (1)1100 (2)1108 (1)1135 (1)1250 (1)1325 (1)1400 (2)1568 (1)1588 (1)1600 (1)1606 (1)1665 (1)1699 (1)1705 (1)1708 (1)1740 (1)1780 (1)1804 (1)1809 (1)1839 (1)1930 (1)1954 (1)1986 (1)Practice StatusAllAccess restricted by its custodians or by law (5)Control of or access to the site is contested (6)Damaged or destroyed in armed conflict (1)Historical; not practised continuously (1)In active religious use (51)Ruin or archaeological site; the cult has ceased (1)Standing, but maintained as a museum or heritage monument (5)Site TypeAllCave sanctuary (natural) (2)Fire temple (1)Gurdwara (9)Monastery or monastic community (3)Monumental sacred image (1)Mosque (1)Rock-cut or underground sanctuary (2)Sacred city or quarter (3)Sacred landscape or country (1)Sacred mountain, hill or peak (7)Sacred river, lake, spring or sea (5)Shrine (2)Stupa or pagoda (4)Synagogue (1)Temple or temple complex (26)Tomb or grave of a holy figure (2)TraditionAllBahá’í Faith (1)Buddhism (7)Hinduism (31)Islam (1)Jainism (7)Judaism (1)Sikhism (9)Zoroastrianism (1)Sacred ToAllHinduism (5)Sikhism (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 58Ajanta CavesIndiaAjmer SharifIndiaAmarnath CaveIndiaAnandpur SahibIndiaAyodhyaIndiaBadrinathIndiaBodh GayaIndiaBrihadishvara TempleIndiaDilwara TemplesIndiaDwarkadhish Temple, DwarkaIndiaEllora CavesIndiaGangotriIndiaGirnarIndiaGovardhan HillIndiaGreat Stupa of SanchiIndiaGurdwara Tuti Gandi Sahib, MuktsarIndiaGuruvayurIndiaGyanvapi MosqueIndiaHarmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple)IndiaHemkund SahibIndiaJagannath Temple, PuriIndiaKalighat Kali TempleIndiaKamakhyaIndiaKashi Vishwanath TempleIndiaKedarnathIndiaKonark Sun TempleIndiaKurukshetraIndiaKushinagarIndiaLotus TempleIndiaMahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga TempleIndiaMathuraIndiaMeenakshi Amman TempleIndiaNizamuddin DargahIndiaPalitana and ShatrunjayaIndiaPiprahwa StupaIndiaRamanathaswamy Temple, RameswaramIndiaRanakpurIndiaRanganathaswamy Temple, SrirangamIndiaRumtek MonasteryIndiaSabarimalaIndiaSammed ShikharjiIndiaSarnathIndiaShravanabelagolaIndiaSomnath TempleIndiaTakht Sri Damdama SahibIndiaTakht Sri Hazur SahibIndiaTakht Sri Keshgarh SahibIndiaTakht Sri Patna SahibIndiaThe Akal TakhtIndiaThe Paradesi SynagogueIndiaThe Vishnupad Temple, GayaIndiaTirumala Tirupati Venkateswara TempleIndiaTriveni Sangam and the Kumbh MelaIndiaUdvada Atash BehramIndiaVaishno DeviIndiaVaranasiIndiaVitthal Temple, PandharpurIndiaYamunotriIndiaConnectionsShowing the first 400 of 449 connections.Sources1.
