Origin from 1148
Senanque Abbey, near the village of Gordes in the Vaucluse department of Provence, France, is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1148 by monks from Mazan Abbey under the patronage of Alfant, Bishop of Cavaillon, and Ramon Berenguer II, Count of Provence. Its Romanesque church, consecrated in 1178, is unusually oriented with its apse facing north, and the surviving monastic buildings include a cloister, dormitory, chapter house, and a heated scriptorium, with a refectory added in the seventeenth century. Senanque is grouped with Silvacane Abbey and Le Thoronet Abbey as the Three Sisters of Provence for their shared austere Cistercian architecture. Monastic life lapsed for a period before a small community, affiliated with Lerins Abbey, returned in 1988; the monks today support themselves partly by cultivating lavender and keeping bees, and the abbey also offers spiritual retreat accommodations.
