Home›Sages›All SagesBrowse ByAll SagesFigures whose authority rests on wisdom rather than on revelation, office or descent, which makes this the widest heading in the category and the loosest. It holds the Chinese classical philosophers, the Vedanta commentators, jurists such as Maimonides and Al-Ghazali, and the founders of the Japanese Buddhist schools. What gathers them is partly what they lack: no tradition represented here calls them prophet, priest or king. That makes the shelf a residue as much as a category, so a place on it should be read as a statement about the kind of authority a figure held, not as a claim that any two of them are comparable.FactsLearn MoreAll SagesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedA heading of the atlas's own making rather than a category from the study of religion: figures revered for wisdom and teaching rather than for rule, prophecy or miracle. 2Peoples and Traditions CoveredWell-attestedA cover term over traditions with unrelated criteria for the office: the rishi of Vedic India, the acharya of the Indian schools, the Tirthankara of Jainism, the rabbinic sage, the junzi and the classical masters of China. None of those words is what the English word names, and the heading should not be read as one class of person. 2DirectoryCategoryWell-attestedFigures 1Learn MoreThe sages This group gathers sages: figures revered above all for wisdom: teachers, philosophers, seers and learned masters whose insight rather than miracle or rule defines their place in tradition. It is the largest character grouping in the atlas and spans many cultures. The browser will find the wise figures of many traditions, the rishis of India, the teachers of Chinese thought, the philosophers and holy teachers of other cultures. The entries describe each sage's teaching and the tradition that remembers them. All SagesFilter Results73 entriesPlace of OriginAllAncient Israel (1)Bengal (1)China (10)Egypt (1)England (4)Germany (3)India (22)Japan (6)Judea (1)Kashmir (1)Kerala (1)Maharashtra (2)Persia (1)Tamil Nadu (1)Tibet (1)United States (1)HistoricityAllComposite figure: more than one person or tradition behind the name (3)Historically attested (58)Historicity debated (7)Legendary: known from narrative tradition, not the historical record (6)TraditionAllAncient Egyptian Religion (1)Bahá’í Faith (1)Buddhism (13)Christianity (12)Confucianism (5)Hinduism (26)Islam (7)Judaism (4)Sikhism (1)Taoism (3)Veneration StatusAllActively venerated in a living tradition (46)No Cult Attested (9)Venerated in a modern revival tradition (1)Revered InAllBaha'i Faith (1)Buddhism (12)Christianity (9)Confucianism (3)Hinduism (18)Islam (6)Judaism (2)Taoism (1)Lifespan Start YearAll-2680 (1)-579 (1)-551 (1)-372 (1)-340 (1)-313 (1)-310 (1)-200 (1)-50 (2)135 (1)300 (1)345 (1)400 (1)401 (1)500 (1)602 (1)619 (1)638 (1)767 (1)774 (1)788 (1)871 (1)982 (1)1017 (1)1033 (1)1058 (1)1077 (1)1078 (1)1130 (2)1133 (1)1138 (1)1143 (1)1173 (1)1200 (2)1207 (1)1238 (1)1250 (1)1260 (1)1263 (1)1270 (1)1308 (1)1320 (1)1342 (1)1380 (1)1486 (1)1497 (1)1504 (1)1516 (1)1583 (1)1586 (1)1608 (1)1686 (1)1703 (1)1714 (1)1836 (1)1844 (1)1863 (1)1879 (1)Child OfAllBaha'u'llah (1)Manner Of DeathAllDied by accident or misadventure (1)Died of natural causes (19)Executed (2)Taken up without dying, as the tradition holds (3)GenderAllFemale (8)Male (65)CanonizationAllBeatified: recognised as blessed, the stage before canonization (2)Formally canonized (1)Not part of any canonization process (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 73Abd al-Qadir al-JilaniSagesAbdu'l-BahaSagesAdi ShankaraSagesAkiva ben JosephSagesAkka MahadeviSagesAl-GhazaliSagesAndalSagesAsangaSagesAtishaSagesAtriSagesBharadvajaSagesBuddhaghosaSagesChaitanyaSagesChen TuanSagesCheng YiSagesConfuciusSagesDogenSagesEvagrius PonticusSagesGautama AkshapadaSagesGeorge WhitefieldSagesGritsamadaSagesHadewijch of AntwerpSagesHakuinSagesHeinrich BullingerSagesHonenSagesHuinengSagesIbn AbbasSagesIbn TaymiyyaSagesImhotepSagesJaiminiSagesJohanan ben ZakkaiSagesJonathan EdwardsSagesJudah ha-NasiSagesJulian of NorwichSagesKabirSagesKanadaSagesKhidrSagesKukaiSagesLalleshwariSagesLaoziSagesLongchenpaSagesMadhvaSagesMaimonidesSagesMarguerite PoreteSagesMechthild of MagdeburgSagesMeister EckhartSagesMenciusSagesMirabaiSagesMoinuddin ChishtiSagesNamdevSagesPatanjaliSagesPeter BulkeleySagesPhilipp MelanchthonSagesPseudo-Dionysius the AreopagiteSagesRamakrishnaSagesRamana MaharshiSagesRamanujaSagesSaichoSagesShinranSagesThomas a KempisSagesThomas HookerSagesTukaramSagesValmikiSagesVamadevaSagesVasisthaSagesVasubandhuSagesVishvamitraSagesVivekanandaSagesVyasaSagesXuanzangSagesXunziSagesZhu XiSagesZhuangziSagesSources1.
