Salt (Alchemical Substances)

Salts of the alchemical tradition, crystalline substances such as borax and alum that were dissolved, recrystallized and calcined in the laboratory. Salt was one of the three principles of matter in the system taught by Paracelsus, and many practical recipes relied on specific salts as fluxes, mordants and reagents. Many were also sold as drugs, dyes and cleaning agents outside the alchemist workshop, so their records span craft and medicine. Members placed here so far include Alum, Borax.
