All Salvation and Liberation

The end state a tradition works toward, and how it is reached: salvation, liberation, enlightenment, union. The two words in the subcategory's own name mark a real fault line, since traditions that speak of salvation typically posit a saving other, while liberation traditions more often locate the work in the practitioner.

Fifty Seven Doctrines of What Must Be Escaped and How the Traditions Escape It

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Salvation and Liberation is the second largest doctrine grouping the atlas holds, fifty seven concepts describing what a tradition must be saved from and how that release is achieved.

Christian atonement supplies the densest cluster: ransom theory, Christus Victor, satisfaction theory, penal substitution, moral influence theory, the governmental theory and recapitulation each explain Christ's death by a different mechanism, and expiation, justification, sanctification, entire sanctification, glorification, assurance, sola fide, law and gospel and theosis carry the ordering of grace once received.

Buddhist liberation forms the largest single-tradition thread: the Four Noble Truths state the diagnosis, and Nirvana, Buddhahood, the Three Jewels, the Four Immeasurables and the Ten Perfections name the goal and its supports. Ekayana, tariki and jiriki, sudden and gradual awakening, Nichiren's exclusive devotion, Sokushin Jobutsu and Lamrim name six schools' own disputes over the path. Vajrayana tantra and guru devotion names a further, restricted method; its own record states its deeper levels open only through empowerment from a qualified teacher and stay withheld from those unprepared, a limit this entry keeps.

Hindu, Jain and Sikh liberation answer differently: moksha, bhakti, jnana yoga, grace and self-effort in Vaishnavism, mukti in Sikh teaching, kevala jnana and ratnatraya name distinct paths. Eternal marriage and the plan of salvation state Latter-day Saint teaching; the imprisonment and release of light and henosis state Manichaean and Neoplatonic cosmological rescue; and tikkun, tikkun olam and Shatsthala's six stages close the group.
