The sacred sites of Satsana Phi, the indigenous spirit religion of lowland Lao and Tai village communities, practiced alongside Theravada Buddhism across Laos and northeastern Thailand. Wat Si Muang in Vientiane, the city's lak mueang or city pillar shrine, was built in 1563 on the ruins of an earlier Khmer Hindu shrine and is held to be guarded by the spirit of a local woman, standing today as a working Buddhist temple that still carries this older layer of spirit veneration.
