Tablet I: Enkidu the Wild Man

Epic of Gilgamesh

The first tablet of the standard Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh opens with the people of Uruk complaining to the gods that their king Gilgamesh is a tyrant, prompting the birth goddess Aruru to pinch off clay and shape it into Enkidu, a wild man raised among the animals of the steppe to be Gilgamesh's equal and check. A trapper spots Enkidu and, unable to overcome him by force, brings the temple prostitute Shamhat to seduce and civilize him, teaching him bread, beer and human ways before he sets out for Uruk to confront the king.
