Micah is the prophet to whom the Book of Micah is traditionally attributed. New World Encyclopedia says he was active in the southern Kingdom of Judah during the late eighth century BCE, in the reigns of the Judean kings Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, as the early Assyrian Empire rose. He decried the social injustice of Judah's rulers and upper class and the corruption of its priests and even of some fellow prophets, and he warned of the impending Assyrian threat as the consequence of Judah's sins. The book also holds hopeful passages that promise a righteous king from Bethlehem. Scholars debate which portions of the book originate in his time. He is entered here so the haftarah reading drawn from the Book of Micah can be attributed to its traditional author.
