This page groups scripture portions by the kind of writing they actually are. Wikipedia notes that religious texts "often feature a compilation or discussion of beliefs, ritual practices, moral commandments and laws, ethical conduct, spiritual aspirations, and admonitions for fostering a religious community." Browsing by literary form lets a visitor compare a law code against a hymn or a narrative within the same scripture.

What a Scripture Portion Is

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A scripture portion is a named, citable subdivision of a scripture, the unit a tradition itself uses to refer to part of its own text rather than the whole of it. The weekly Torah reading portions of Judaism, each one carrying its own Hebrew name drawn from an early word in the passage, are the clearest example, but the type covers the same idea wherever a tradition has settled on its own way of dividing a long text into named or numbered pieces that can be read, studied and cited on their own.

The atlas records what portion of the larger work each entry covers, which text it belongs to, and enough of its content to place it, without reproducing the scripture itself at length. This is distinct from a Passage entry, which quotes a short, specific excerpt for its own wording; a scripture portion is the larger unit the passage sits inside, the chapter rather than the line. Grouping entries this way lets a reader move from a specific verse to the whole reading it belongs to, and from there to the text it was drawn from.

The atlas records a scripture portion's own internal structure where a tradition marks one, its main themes or events, and how it relates to the portions read immediately before and after it, since a cycle of readings is usually built to move through an entire text over a fixed span of time rather than to be read out of order.

How Traditions Divide Their Scriptures

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The systems traditions use to divide their scriptures were mostly settled centuries after the texts themselves. The weekly Torah portion cycle used in synagogues today traces to ancient reading practice but was standardized only gradually; the chapter numbers now printed in every Bible were added in the thirteenth century, commonly credited to Stephen Langton, and the verse numbers familiar today came later still, added to a printed New Testament in the sixteenth century. Neither system existed when the underlying texts were composed, and both were added specifically to make citation and comparison possible.

Other traditions solved the same problem their own way and on their own timeline. The Quran was divided into surahs of clearly unequal length from very early in its transmission, ordered roughly by length rather than by chronology of revelation, while Buddhist scripture is grouped into nikayas, collections sorted by the length or form of the discourse rather than by subject. Comparing how differently each tradition chose to cut up its own text is itself a small window into what each tradition thought was worth keeping together.

None of these systems is native to the text it now organizes; every one of them was layered on afterward by later readers trying to make a long, originally undivided work easier to study, teach and cite accurately, which is worth remembering whenever a chapter or verse boundary is treated as though the original author had placed it there.
