Vamadeva is a Vedic rishi, an ancient sage of the Gautama line who is named in the Sanskrit dictionaries quoted by Wisdom Library as the author of the hymns that make up nearly the whole of the fourth mandala of the Rigveda. The same glossary states plainly that Mandala 4 of the Rigveda was composed by Vamadeva. The Puranic literature gathered on that page also speaks of a hermit of the name whose hermitage supplied horses to a king, and of a Vamadeva who was a son of Atharvan Angiras and a rishi by austerity, so the name covers more than one figure in the epics and Puranas. This entry concerns the Rigvedic seer, and it exists so the fourth mandala can be attributed to its traditional composer.
