Individual verses or short verse groups within the Quran that carry their own widely used name and are commonly studied, recited or cited as a unit distinct from the surah that contains them, such as Ayat al-Kursi, the Throne Verse from Surah Al-Baqara describing God's sovereignty, and Ayat an-Nur, the Verse of Light from Surah An-Nur describing God as the light of the heavens and earth. These entries sit at a finer grain than a surah, juz or hizb: each names a specific passage valued for its own theological or devotional content rather than its place in a recitation-pacing scheme.
