Inbe no Hironari

Historians, Ethnographers & Scholars of Religion

Inbe no Hironari was a minor official of the early Heian period and a member of the Inbe clan, a hereditary Shinto priestly family that served at the imperial court alongside the Nakatomi clan. The years of his birth and death are not recorded. In 807 he composed the Kogoshui, known in English as Gleanings from Ancient Stories, an account of Japanese mythology and early history told from the Inbe point of view, and presented it to the emperor as a protest against the rival Nakatomi, who had increasingly eclipsed the Inbe in court ritual. His purpose was to show that the ancestor of the Inbe stood equal in dignity and importance to the ancestor of the Nakatomi. One account records that he was conferred the Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, in 808, the year after he wrote it.
