Home›Scriptures & Texts›Language›Koine GreekBrowse ByKoine GreekThis page groups scripture texts by the language they were first written down in. Wikipedia notes that most sacred scriptures "were originally a part of their oral tradition, and were passed down through memorization from generation to generation until they were finally committed to writing," at which point a specific language was fixed. Browsing by language lets a visitor find every text first written in the same tongue.FactsLearn MoreKoine GreekSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedA standard comparative category, with the caveat the field insists on: scripturality is a relation between a community and a text, not a quality of the text, and several works here were transmitted orally for centuries before being written. 1OverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedTexts a community holds to be authoritative - revealed, inspired or foundational - grouped by the tradition that receives them. The kind and degree of that authority differs greatly between traditions and is not a property of the class. 1StructureStructureWell-attestedCanonical, deuterocanonical and apocryphal texts spanning many religious traditions 1Learn MoreThe Canonical Scriptures of the Religions This category holds the canonical scriptures of the world's religions: the Vedas and Upanishads, the Torah and the wider Tanakh, the Gospels and the rest of the Christian Bible, the Quran, the Pali Canon, the Guru Granth Sahib and others. Each entry records what the text is, the religion it belongs to, and its place in that tradition's life and authority. A scripture is not simply a book but a book a community holds to be authoritative, revealed, inspired or foundational, and the degree and kind of authority differs greatly between traditions, from verbatim revelation to inspired testimony to a canon assembled over centuries.Canon, Transmission and Criticism How a scripture came to be (composed, compiled, transmitted and finally fixed as canon), is often a long and studied history, and the atlas distinguishes the tradition's account of a text's origin from the findings of textual scholarship. Oral transmission, multiple authorship, editing and translation lie behind many scriptures that a tradition receives as a unity. The entries note the text's language, rough date and structure, its status within its tradition, and, where relevant, the main lines of scholarly study, keeping confessional and historical-critical views clearly apart. The esoteric and occult literature is treated separately under the esoteric-text category.Koine GreekFilter Results32 entriesLiterary FormAllApocalypse (1)Chronicle (2)Cosmogony / creation myth (1)Didactic narrative / novella (4)Epistle / letter (4)Gospel (6)Liturgical / prayer (1)Manual (1)Philosophical dialogue (2)Philosophical treatise (4)Text collection / anthology (5)Wisdom literature (2)HistoricityAllHistorically attested (8)Historicity debated (13)Canonical StatusAllApocryphal (12)Canonical (3)Deuterocanonical (7)Non-canonical (16)Pseudepigraphal (1)TraditionAllAnabaptism (1)Anglican Communion (7)Anglicanism (7)Baptist (1)Calvinism (Reformed) (2)Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (1)Church of Cyprus (9)Church of England (7)Church of Greece (9)Church of Ireland (7)Church of Scotland (1)Church of Sweden (1)Dutch Reformed Church (1)Eastern Orthodoxy (9)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (9)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (1)Georgian Orthodox Church (9)Global Methodist Church (1)Greek Orthodox Church (9)Jehovah's Witnesses (1)Lutheranism (1)Maronite Church (5)Methodism (2)Old Believers (9)Oriental Orthodoxy (1)Pentecostalism (1)Presbyterianism (1)Quakerism (Religious Society of Friends) (1)Roman Catholicism (5)Romanian Orthodox Church (9)Russian Orthodox Church (9)Saint Thomas Christians (1)Serbian Orthodox Church (9)Seventh-day Adventism (1)The Episcopal Church (7)The United Methodist Church (1)Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (5)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (9)Attributed ToAllNicodemus (1)Thomas (1)Authored ByAllClement of Rome (1)Hermas the Freedman (1)Manasseh of Judah (1)Originated InAllRome (1)Originates In LanguageAllAramaic (2)Biblical Hebrew (2)Coptic (8)Koine Greek (32)Excluded From CanonAllAnabaptism (8)Baptist (8)Calvinism (Reformed) (8)Church of Scotland (8)Church of Sweden (7)Dutch Reformed Church (8)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (7)Jehovah's Witnesses (8)Lutheranism (7)Pentecostalism (8)Presbyterianism (8)Protestantism (8)Quakerism (Religious Society of Friends) (8)Seventh-day Adventism (8)Canon divisionAllApocrypha (Scriptures and Texts) (2)Apocryphal Additions (3)Apostolic Fathers (8)Bible Translations (1)Gnostic Gospels (Scriptures and Texts) (8)Maccabean Literature (2)New Testament Apocryphal Gospels (2)Pseudepigrapha (Scriptures and Texts) (1)Wisdom Literature (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 321 EsdrasKoine Greek3 MaccabeesKoine Greek4 MaccabeesKoine GreekActs of PilateKoine GreekActs of ThomasKoine GreekAdditions to DanielKoine GreekAdditions to EstherKoine GreekApocryphon of JohnKoine GreekBooks of the MaccabeesKoine GreekDidacheKoine GreekEpistle of BarnabasKoine GreekEpistle to DiognetusKoine GreekFirst ClementKoine GreekGospel of JudasKoine GreekGospel of MaryKoine GreekGospel of PeterKoine GreekGospel of PhilipKoine GreekGospel of ThomasKoine GreekGospel of TruthKoine GreekInfancy Gospel of JamesKoine GreekLetter of Polycarp to the PhilippiansKoine GreekLetters of Ignatius of AntiochKoine GreekMartyrdom of PolycarpKoine GreekNag Hammadi LibraryKoine GreekNew TestamentKoine GreekPistis SophiaKoine GreekPrayer of ManassehKoine GreekSeptuagintKoine GreekShepherd of HermasKoine GreekTestament of the Twelve PatriarchsKoine GreekThe BibleKoine GreekWisdom of SolomonKoine GreekSources1.
