All Seas (Bodies of Water)

Seas of religious and historical importance, partly enclosed stretches of salt water on whose shores prophets walked, empires traded and pilgrims sailed. Their names and shores recur in scripture and in the sacred geography of the neighboring peoples. Several were crossed in famous voyages recorded in sacred texts, and the sea itself sometimes appears as a power to be tamed, crossed or feared in the stories of the surrounding peoples. Members placed here so far include Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Dead Sea, Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Arabian Sea, Aegean Sea, Sea of Japan.
