Second Temple Jewish Sites

Sites significant to Jewish practice during the Second Temple period, from the temple's rebuilding after the Babylonian exile to its destruction by Rome, a period that shaped much of later Jewish, Christian and to some extent Islamic sacred geography. Sacred sites are grouped by tradition at a fine grain here, so a heading can be narrow without that saying anything about the tradition's own reach.

Whose Classification This Is
"Second Temple Judaism" is a modern scholarly periodisation, not a name any of these communities used of themselves. Its conventional bounds are 516 BCE to 70 CE, and what it collects is a plurality of Judaisms - priestly, Pharisaic, sectarian, Hellenistic - rather than one religion with one centre. 2
Overview
What Defines This Grouping
Sites of the Jewish world between the rebuilding of the Temple after the Babylonian exile and its destruction by Rome - the period that produced the sectarian movements out of which both rabbinic Judaism and Christianity came. 2
