Fraternitas Saturni

Also Known As FS
Hermetic Societies
Origin 1926

Fraternitas Saturni, meaning the Brotherhood of Saturn, is a German magical lodge that works a distinctive astrological and Saturnian system of occultism combining Thelemic, Hermetic, and sexual magical elements with a doctrine centered on the planet Saturn as a principle of severity and higher initiation. It maintains an elaborate grade structure and is one of the most enduring continental magical orders. Its orientation toward the darker Saturnian principle sets it apart from the more devotional Rosicrucian bodies.

The Order That Took the Dark Side of the Planet Deliberately

The Brotherhood of Saturn is the most enduring of the continental magical lodges and the one that most self-consciously chose severity over devotion.

A Saturnian system

Founded in Berlin in 1926 by Eugen Grosche, who wrote as Gregor A. Gregorius, after a break with a German branch associated with the OTO, the lodge works a distinctive astrological and Saturnian system combining Thelemic, Hermetic and sexual-magical elements. Its doctrine centres on Saturn as a principle of severity and higher initiation, and it is this orientation toward the darker planetary principle, rather than any criminality, that sets it apart from the devotional Rosicrucian bodies and marks it in this atlas as a darker current.

Suppression and survival

Like the other German orders it was suppressed under National Socialism and refounded after the Second World War, and it has continued in Germany under later leadership. Its persistence through the twentieth century, when most magical lodges were short-lived, makes it one of the principal channels by which the Saturnian and sexual-magical strands of the German occult revival reached the present.

Suppression, Revival, and a Deliberately Dark Reading

The Fraternitas Saturni was founded in Berlin in 1926 out of the collapse of a Pansophic lodge, and it took Crowley's Law of Thelema while reading it differently. Where Crowley's formula centres on the will and love, Gregorius set a Saturnian emphasis on severity, testing and the discipline of the threshold, and the order made no attempt to soften that. Saturn is the planet of limit, time and the hard teacher, and the order chose it knowingly.

Like every German lodge of its kind, it did not survive the 1930s as an open body. Secret societies were suppressed under the National Socialist regime, the lodge closed, and Grosche spent the war years without an organisation. He reconstituted it after 1945 and led it until his death in 1964, after which it continued through several changes of leadership and at least one significant schism.

The order is worth including for what it shows about transmission. It is a case of a German lodge receiving Thelema at second hand, in a different language and a different intellectual climate, and producing something its source would not have recognised. That happens constantly in this field and is usually invisible, because most orders present themselves as faithful carriers. This one made its divergence part of its identity.

Saturn, Planets

The lodge is named for the planet and builds its doctrine on it, reading Saturn as the principle of severity and as the threshold a candidate has to cross. No other order in the atlas takes a single planet as its organising principle.

Thelema, Religions

The lodge accepted the Law of Thelema and read it through its own Saturnian doctrine rather than adopting Crowley's system whole. It is Thelema-influenced rather than a Thelemic body, and the distinction is one it drew itself.
